This charming, 42,080 SF locally recognized Historical Building was originally built in 1926 to support Scripps Hospitals growing need for nurses.

It served as the College of Nursing until the 1970’s. Dempsey Construction was chosen to transform and revive this Historical Building, enabling it to be represented as a premier San Diego Landmark.

The project consists of two phases; Phase 1, which focused on the restoration of the exterior façade, bringing a new enhanced look to existing finishes while staying true to the original character of the building. This work included restoration of double hung wood windows, wood doors, ornamental precast concrete panels, installation of authentic clay roof tiles, structural retrofit of existing roof framing, plaster of deteriorated areas and painting of the entire building exterior.

Phase 2 required a complete buildout of the interior, as well as site improvements. This scope consisted of new MEP systems and finishing of all new and existing finishes, serving the building appropriately for its new intended use as office space for Scripps administrative staff. This building is vital for the success of the new cancer center adjacent to the property.

With restoration complete, the College Building of Nursing is once again the crown jewel of the Mercy Hospital campus; echoing compassion and care, the exact basis in which it was founded.
