Spotlight: Intern Class of 2025

Each year, we invite talented Construction Management students from schools across the United States to join our team. The Dempsey summer internship program offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a professional setting, develop valuable skills, and make meaningful connections.
Get to know the Dempsey intern class of 2025. To help you get to know them better, we asked each intern a few fun questions!
AVA BURNETT, BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY
What was your first job?
I grew up babysitting, but my first real job was at CVS in Encinitas when I was 15.
If you weren’t interning this summer, what would you be doing?
Hopefully I would be traveling and going to the beach, but realistically I would probably be working anywhere to make some money before I go back to school.
Would you instead go 100 years forward in time or back – why?
I would definitely want to go forward 100 years in time. I think it would be super cool to see how technology and medicine have advanced. Also, I would not have anywhere near the same number of opportunities or freedoms in 1925 as I do now.
If you had your own talk show, who would be your first 3 guests (dead or alive)?
My first 3 guests would be Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and George Harrison.
What are you most proud of in life?
I am most proud of the friendships I have made and maintained.
CHARLIE GENTRY, UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA AT OMAHA
If you could do any job in the world, what would it be?
Touring drummer.
What was your favorite childhood Halloween costume?
My favorite costume growing up was Steve and a creeper from Minecraft.
Which word or phrase do you most overuse?
Probably “bro” or “this kid”.
If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be?
I think a sea turtle or something, they can just coast and they live ages.
What are you most proud of in life?
Something I am most proud of is getting paid to attend college.
GAVIN PIKE, POINT LOMA NAZARENE UNIVERSITY
If you weren’t interning this summer, what would you be doing?
Lifeguarding or ranching.
If you could do any job in the world, what would it be?
Run a cattle ranch.
Would you instead go 100 years forward in time or back – why?
Back 100000%. I would do anything to live in California before there were any people and just ranches and an abundance of wildlife.
If you had your own talk show, who would be your first 3 guests (dead or alive)?
The apostle Paul, Teddy Roosevelt, and Frank Sinatra.
What are you most proud of in life?
Making people happier.
KADEN GARNS, BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY
What was your first job?
Scooping Ice Cream at Handel’s Ice Cream in Carlsbad.
If you could do any job in the world, what would it be?
I would like to own a small donut shop. Bringing simple joy to the people.
What was your favorite childhood Halloween costume?
I was a pumpkin once. That was pretty cool.
If you were to die and come back as a person or a thing, what would it be?
I’d come back as Joey Chestnut, the world-famous hotdog-eating record holder.
What are you most proud of in life?
I am most proud of my two years of service as a Church Missionary in New York City
Dempsey Summer Internship Program
Dempsey interns gain real job experience through a balance of project-related administrative tasks and hands-on, learning-focused activities. A Realistic Job Preview (RJP) allows interns to experience the day-to-day tasks of roles such as Estimator, Project Engineer, and Foreman. Interns spend time on the job, working directly with and under the guidance of Dempsey Construction team members in these positions.
