Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Alford.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Nick. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was a fly fishing guide in Idaho and had the “brilliant” idea that I wanted to leave the mountains and move back to San Diego and get into commercial real estate.

So, in 1998, I traded in my flies, for ties, and started working at Flocke & Avoyer Commercial Real Estate, then on to Burnham Real Estate and finished up at Cushman & Wakefield. During my 15 years in commercial real estate I focused on the development, leasing and sales of retail shopping centers throughout Southern California.

As the commercial real estate market sat in doldrums, I decided that I wanted to set out and do something new. A quick analysis of moving the family to a remote area of the Eastern Baja peninsula did not get a lot of votes with the wife and kids, so……. That is when I met John Dempsey, founder and President of Dempsey Construction and listened to his vision and long-term plan for the company.

I joined the company in 2012 and hold the title of Vice President.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Depends on the definition of a “smooth road.” A smooth road in central Baja is a little different than a smooth road in San Diego.

But to answer the question, yes. When I joined the company in 2012, it was a company of 4 people, subleasing space in UTC and eating Fig Newtons for lunch, with an annual volume of approximately $3.5M. Fast forward to today, we have 53 employees, a 12,000 SF corporate office in Carlsbad and do annual volumes of over $70M. It’s been a ton of work and effort, but truly rewarding climb along the way.

However, I still knock on wood every day and deflate my tires to make the road as smooth as possible.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Dempsey Construction is a San Diego-based company that specializes in providing a full scope of general contracting services for commercial property owners and tenants. The company was founded by long-time construction veteran, and former President of Lusardi Construction, John Dempsey. John started the company in 2010 with the vision to create something truly great…. a company focused on a culture that fosters individual growth, delivers best-in-class service and product, and has fun doing it.

We believe in Genuine Building. For us, it best describes not only what we do, but how we do it and why we do it. Our comprehensive suite of services and solutions is designed to deliver excellence. From preconstruction and project management through project closeout, our commitment to provide best-in-class service and expertise charts the course of every project.

As a company, we focus on a wide array of project types throughout California, but there are certain projects that get us really excited. We love projects that have a real impact on the community. Whether this is the renovation of an older facility into a new vibrant version of its former self, or a total re-purposing of an underutilized property into something that gives back to the people.

The buildings that we build will stand long after we are gone, so might as well build some cool shit, right?

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in La Jolla and loved anything that involved the ocean…… fishing, spearfishing, diving, paddle boarding, sailing……. and would get out on/in the water as much as I could.
